Droplet-based microfluidic synthesis of nanogels for controlled drug delivery: tailoring nanomaterial properties via pneumatically actuated flow-focusing junction

Abstract: A droplet-based microfluidic process relying on an actuated flow-focusing device was used for the in-flow synthesis of hyaluronic acid-polyethyleneimine nanogels with improved drug delivery properties.

“…4C enabled the synthesis of polymeric NPs via droplet-based microfluidics. 72 The polymers hyaluronic acid (HA) and linear polyethyleneimine (LEPI) were covalently crosslinked in each droplet to produce highly monodisperse polymeric NPs with tunable sizes of 92-190 nm and a very small PDI of 0.015. The release of encapsulated DOX exhibited an enhanced antiblastic effect even at sublethal dosages, highlighting the applicability of this droplet-based microfluidic method in nanomedicine scenarios.…”

“…This approach offers on-demand and controlled drug delivery by controlling the magnetic field strength, exposure time, and amount of loaded nanoparticles. One study employed a droplet-based microfluidic device to synthesize polymeric nanocarriers [ 152 ]. Nanogels were generated using a flow-focusing microfluidic device.…”

“…In material engineering, microdroplets offer an effective method for the synthesis of uniform materials and execution of high-throughput material screening, attributable to the precise control of reaction conditions within each droplet [11,12]. Microdroplets further facilitate the development of novel polymers and colloids, pertinent to emerging applications such as drug delivery technologies [13,14].…”
