Drug overdose in the ED: a record linkage study examining emergency department ICD-10 coding practices in a cohort of people who inject drugs

Abstract: BackgroundDrug overdose is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity amongst people who inject drugs (PWID). Drug overdose surveillance typically relies on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding system, however its real world utilisation and the implications for surveillance have not been well characterised. This study examines the patterns of ICD-10 coding pertaining to drug overdoses within emergency departments for a cohort of known PWID.MethodsCohort data from 688 PWID was linked to … Show more

“…Half the studies in the review (43 of 92) rely on linked electronic health‐care records, which may have inaccuracies in diagnostic coding. For example, there is evidence that drug‐related events such as overdoses are under‐recorded in ED data and may be given other diagnostic codes . This could contribute to the small proportion of health‐care episodes that are ‘drug‐related’ in our results.…”

“…No contexto internacional, uma pesquisa analisou 688 indivíduos usuários de drogas injetáveis na Austrália e, dentre as características observadas, constatou-se uma média de idade de 28,1 anos, que a maioria era do sexo masculino (62%), nunca se casou (42%) e viviam em residência própria com outras pessoas 25 .…”

“…Drug‐ and alcohol‐related presentations were first identified by drug‐ and alcohol‐related International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD‐10) codes (Table 1), 20 an approach that has been used in other cohort studies with similar populations of interest 21–25 . Additional related presentations were electronically searched by one of the investigators (CD) for common drug‐ and alcohol‐related terms in the presenting complaint field of the administrative data provided, including generic names of drugs and alcohol (e.g.…”
