Drug Use, Drug Severity, and Help-Seeking Behaviors of Lesbian and Bisexual Women

Abstract: Background-Illicit substance use and abuse may be an important contributor to behavioral health problems of lesbian and bisexual women. This paper describes the nature and extent of selfreported illicit and licit drug use, associated severity, and substance use-related help-seeking behaviors in an urban/metropolitan community sample of sexual minority women in California.

“…This includes hazardous drinking (McCabe, Hughes, Bostwick, West, & Boyd, 2009), illicit drug use (Corliss, Grella, Mays, & Cochran, 2006), current cigarette smoking status (Rosario et al, 2013) and now WTS. Thus, our findings illustrate a need to consider WTS among sexual minority populations for tobacco cessation efforts aimed at decreasing disparities in smoking among sexual minority populations.…”

“…Research demonstrates higher rates of hazardous drinking (Drabble, Midanik, & Trocki, 2005;McCabe, Hughes, Bostwick, West, & Boyd, 2009;Wilsnack et al, 2008) and illicit drug use (Corliss, Grella, Mays, & Cochran, 2006;Hillier, De Visser, Kavanagh, & McNair, 2003;Hyde, Comfort, McManus, Brown, & Howat, 2009) among SMW compared to heterosexual women. As such, in health care settings, assessment of smoking status should also include the assessment of alcohol and other illicit drug use.…”

“…Sexual minority adults may suffer disproportionately from dysfunctional drug use (Cochran, Ackerman, Mays, & Ross, 2004) and substance/abuse dependence compared to heterosexuals (Meyer, 2003). Sexual minorities also experience barriers to accessing services for substance problems (Corliss, Grella, Mays, & Cochran, 2006); when they do present for treatment, they may display greater co-morbid psychopathology and substance problems than heterosexuals (Cochran & Cauce, 2006). Given that substance abuse treatment programs typically do not address the needs of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals (Cochran, Peavy, & Robohm, 2007; Matthews & Selvidge, 2005), prevention efforts are vital.…”
