DSP-based compensation of non-linear impairments in 100 Gb/s PolMux QPSK

Abstract: PolMux QPSK has emerged as the solution of choice for the first commercial implementations of 100 Gb/s transmission systems. Thanks to coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP), linear distortions such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) can in principle be completely compensated for. And indeed, effective algorithms have been devised and extensively investigate that allow CD-and PMD-resilient transmission of 100 Gb/s over long distances, leaving optical noise accum… Show more

“…In order to validade our physical layer simulator we have performed Bit Error Rate (BER) measurements considering the central wavelength and the input optical power ranging from -1.2 dBm to 1.6 dBm. Figure 5 shows the comparison between the results of our simulations and the experimental results reported in [30]. After the validation process of the physycal layer simulator with one link, we have started the validation process for the Keplan using a three-nodes network with distances between each pair of nodes of 80 km, 120 km, and 150 km as illustrated in Fig.…”

“…We start our analysys with the validation of the physical layer simulator using as a reference the experiments performed by Mussolin et al in [30]. It consists of an 100 Gb/s PDM-QPSK coherent optical transmission system with 16 WDM channels and 50 GHz spacing as shown in Figure 3.…”

“…The second observation in this article is about the oversampling rate which improves system performance by DBP. A number of investigations with diverse transmission configurations have been done with coherent detection and split-step Fourier method (SSFM) Mateo et al, 2011;Millar et al, 2010;Mussolin et al, 2010;Rafique et al, 2011a;Yaman et al, 2009). The results in these articles shows efficient mitigation of CD and NL.…”

“…The results clearly shows efficient compensation of CD and NL by using the DBP algorithm. In (Mussolin et al, 2010;Rafique et al, 2011b) 100Gbit/s dual-polarization (DP) transmission systems are investigated with advanced modulation formats i.e. QPSK and QAM.…”

“…However, the complexity of DBP is currently exorbitant due to significantly high number of processing steps required in such calculations. In order to address these issues, simplifications in the DBP algorithm employing single-step per span or less via DBP techniques [11][12][13][14][15] have already commenced.…”
