DSP Enabled Optical Detection Techniques for PON

Abstract: Some of the different aspects of the DSP enabled receivers in access networks will be addressed in this work. A revision of the main topics which may impact DSP design will be discussed through application examples. Modulation formats, KK receivers and coherent receivers are analyzed at light of the DSP enabled receivers' impact. Also, relevant are FEC and burst mode which are debated at the light of PON requirements. Simplified analog coherent receivers are presented as a use case to serve as simplification p… Show more

“…Along with RS codes, also stronger FEC codes such as low-density parity-check codes or staircase codes have been proposed for PONs in the literature [26]- [28]. In this section, we evaluate the models for PON systems with hard-decision (HD) FEC in terms of achievable information rates (AIRs) [29].…”

“…Furthermore, it is theoretically resistant to polarization mode dispersion up to 30 ps. On the other hand, a coherent system is only the beginning, the main part of these systems is electrical and in particular digital signal processing (DSP) signal processing [102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110].…”

“…While other alternatives such as Kramers-Kronig [4] or full coherent receivers allow for a longer reach, receiver cost and complexity have prevented their adoption in access networks up to this date. Coherent receivers featuring lower complexity have also been proposed for PON applications [5,6]. In [7], a simplified coherent receiver is reported achieving −37.6 dBm sensitivity (BER = 1 × 10 −3 ) at 10 Gbps.…”
