Dual‐band dual‐polarized antenna for WLAN applications

Abstract: A new design for antennas with dual‐band and dual‐polarization operations is described. The design uses a stacked structure that is composed of a lower microstrip antenna and an upper crossed‐dipole antenna. The microstrip antenna, excited with two orthogonal probe feeds, is operated at the lower frequency band, and the crossed‐dipole antenna, excited with a pair of coaxial baluns, is operated at the higher frequency band. Experimental results demonstrate that the 10 dB‐return‐loss impedance bandwidths of the … Show more

“…Moreover, the main drawback of the LP wave for dual‐band operation is multipath fading. Therefore, two orthogonal polarizations have been used in References to reduce multipath fading in DBDP antenna operation. However, these kinds of dual‐polarized antennas provide less sensitivity to the orientation between the transmitting and receiving antennas, less mobility, etc., which can be overcome by the circularly polarized antenna.…”

“…Multi band antenna with dual polarization characteristics reduces the requirement of multiple antennas along with reduction in multipath fading. Acknowledging the merits of dual band dual polarized (DBDP) antenna, various techniques and applications have been reported in the recent past . Shorting pins along with integrated capacitor have been used in Reference to realize first time dual polarization in microstrip antenna.…”

“…Subsequently has been proposed but again involving multiple feed ports. Single port microstrip antenna with dual polarization characteristics is realized using offset feeding and annular slot, parasitic patch, stacked patch, artificial magnetic conductor, and slot coupled power divider . Recent works have been reportedon realizing single port DBDP antenna using dielectric resonators, but thickness of dielectric radiator is still a major constraint of this technique.…”

“…A dual-polarization slot antenna with an impedance bandwidth of 55.9%, low profile and high isolation by using microstrip line balun feed was presented in [10]. In [14][15][16], three dual-band dual-polarized (DBDP) antennas were also presented, but the bandwidths of these antennas are too narrow (< 16%) to apply in wideband wireless communication systems.…”
