Dual mechanochromism of cellulosic cholesteric liquid-crystalline films: wide-ranging colour control and circular dichroism inversion by mechanical stimulus

Abstract: We found that cellulosic liquid-crystalline films displayed not only a wide-ranging colour change but also inversion of circular dichroism upon a mechanical stimulus.

“…Scientists insisted that a molecule's size could not exceed the size of the unit cell determined by X-ray crystallography and ascribed the unusual properties of polymers to the formation of micelles. [5,6] But Staudinger's concept of macromolecule was eventually accepted and modern polymeric materials have since revolutionized much of human society. [7] Another pertinent example of changing perspectives and theories is the development of nanotechnology or nanoscience.…”

“…In order to rationalize these results, we considered the following points. Firstly, the expansion of the helical pitch length induced by heating is attribute to not only the reduction of twisting power, but also the expansion of neighboring distance between nematic layers [23]. Secondly, it is known that hydrogen bonding is stronger than van der Walls force.…”

“…19,20 Moreover, SFA can be used as a general platform to study confinement-induced and dynamic phenomena in CLC, e.g. helix inversion [53][54][55][56] , defect nucleation/annihilation and defect-mediated colloidal interactions, 57 and permeative flow 48,[58][59][60][61] . We anticipate that the behavior of the CLC observed during surface approach was very different from the one observed during separation.…”

“…Cano-Grandjean textures have been studied in great details for fixed confinement conditions. 22,23,[52][53][54][55][56][57][58] In the present work, we focused on the response of the CLC to changes of confinement thickness, and measured both the twist angle Φ and normal force as the surface separation distance D was varied.…”
