We introduce a new dual-tuned Hydrogen/Phosphorus (1H/31P) birdcage coil, referred to as split birdcage coil, and evaluate its performance using both simulations and magnetic resonance (MR) experiments on a 3 T MR scanner. The proposed coil simplifies the practical matters of tuning and matching, which makes the coil easily reproducible. Simulations were run with the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) method to evaluate the sensitivity and homogeneity of the magnetic field generated by the proposed 1H coils. Following simulations, MR experiments were conducted using both a phantom and human thigh to compare the proposed design with a currently available commercial dual-tuned flexible surface coil, referred to as flex surface coil, for signal to noise ratio (SNR) as well as homogeneity for the 31P coil. At regions deep within the human thigh, the split birdcage coil was able to acquire spectroscopic signal with a higher average SNR than the flex surface coil. For all regions except those close to the flex surface coil, the split birdcage coil matched or exceeded the performance of the flex surface coil.

RF coil operation at the ultrahigh field of 7T is fraught with technical challenges that limit the advancement of novel human in vivo applications at 7T. In this work, a hybrid technique combining a microstrip transmission line and a lumped-element L-C loop coil to form a double-nuclear RF coil for proton magnetic resonance imaging and carbon magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 7T was proposed and investigated. Network analysis revealed a high Q-factor and excellent decoupling between the coils. Proton images and localized carbon spectra were acquired with high sensitivity. The successful testing of this novel double-nuclear coil demonstrates the feasibility of this hybrid design for double-nuclear MR imaging and spectroscopy studies at the ultrahigh field of 7T.

MRI using nuclei other than protons is of clinical interest due to the important role of these nuclei in cellular processes. Phosphorous-31 (P), for example, plays an important role in energy metabolism. However, measurement of P can be challenging, as the receive signal is weak compared with that of proton (H). Consequently, it is often necessary to integrate H elements for localizations and B shimming in RF coils intended for P measurements. Good decoupling between theH and the P elements is therefore essential. In this paper, bent dipole antennas tuned toH were integrated with a four channel P loop coil array, in a manner providing strong geometric decoupling between dipoles and loops. As the physical length of a resonant dipole antenna is too long at 3T, the dipole antennas were bent around the load. The loss ofP elements due to the presence of the dipole antennas was evaluated by measuring scattering parameters and comparing the SNR of P spectra with and without the presence of the dipole antennas. The performance of the bent dipole antenna was evaluated by simulation and sensitivity measurement. The Q-factors and the SNR of the four-loop array were reduced by less than 5% when the bent dipole antennas were introduced. The measured sensitivity of the bent dipole was higher (15%) than that of dual-tuned birdcage. The combined bent dipole and loop array is therefore a promising design forH/P applications at 3T.
