Dual responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels having spironaphthoxazines as pendant groups

Abstract: Stimuli responsive hydrogels (PNIPAAm‐MSp) with a thermoresponsive backbone and photochromic pendant groups were synthesized via free radical polymerization using N‐isopropylacrylamide, modified spironaphthoxazines with a polymerizable double bond (MSp) as photochromic monomer, the crosslinker N,N′‐methylenebis(acrylamide) and the initiator 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) in dimethylsulfoxide. The polymers are dual responsive, in that poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) responds to temperature changes whereas … Show more

“…The introduction of small amounts of ionic units into non-ionic polymeric networks is widely employed method to increase the swelling and responsive characteristics of poly[N-isopropylacrylamide] to a great extent [18][19][20][21][22]. In the present investigation 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanosulphonic acid was incorporated into the hydrogel network, which imparts a poly anionic character to the poly[NIPAM] hydrogel.…”

“…Recent studies illustrate that smart hydrogels, which have dynamic topography along with volume, [ 9 ] color, [ 10 ] and wettability [ 9b,11 ] changes when exposed to external stimuli, can be an ideal candidate as biointerfaces for cell behavior regulation.…”

“…183 Dual responsive (to temperature and light), crosslinked hydrogels incorporating poly (NIPAAM) and pendant spirooxazines have also been reported. 184 Irradiation with UV light was found to enhance their water absorption and cause swelling, while an increase in temperature was found to do the opposite. In this system the spirooxazine open form is charge separated and of a higher dipole moment compared to its closed form, and therefore stabilized by an association with water.…”
