Durability of Pavement Materials with Exposure to Various Anti-Icing Strategies

Abstract: Anti-icing is a critical topic in durability assessment for pavement infrastructures, and it varies according to local policies. To provide sufficient information to winter maintenance agencies, and help compare the merits and shortcomings of each strategy, this review summarizes the widely used anti-icing strategies, including elastic surfaces or high-friction overlays, asphalt binders mixed with anti-icing additives, pavement heating technologies, deicers, and fixed automated spray technology, from academic … Show more

“…Consequently, many nations prioritize the treatment of road snow and ice and have conducted extensive research. The literature has explored various solutions, including manual and mechanical removal, snow melting agent application, heated pavement systems, conductive concrete, freezing inhibition pavement technology, and ice-suppressing and coating technologies [4,5].…”

“…Several scholars have examined ice-suppressing materials and explored construction technologies based on the principles of ice and snow melting and ice suppression [4,13]. An anti-freeze ice-suppressing material for asphalt pavement was developed by adding a suitable amount of slow-release anti-icing agent (Mafilon) to emulsified asphalt.…”

“…Winter maintenance activities are analyzed from the perspectives of materials and costs and this is greatly beneficial to providing agencies with correct snow and ice control instructions [8]. FAST systems take place in markets especially in North America and Europe implemented with the support of universities and/or transport ministries.…”

“…In winter, roads, pavements, and adjacent areas maintenance to ensure practicability and safety involves snow removal by means of various de-icing agents. Two main ways are used globally for de-icing: mechanical way (sand, crushed stone, rock crumbs) to increase friction, and chemical way (reagents containing Na, K, Mg salts with various additives) [GERASIMOV, CHUGUNOVA 2015;XU et al 2021]. In Canada only, about 5000.00 Gg of road salt are used annually in China -600.00 Gg in year, in Sweden -150.00 Gg in year [ANTONSON et al 2021;RØDLAND et al 2020].…”
