Dusty Mafic Rocks Along the Path of Chang'E‐4 Rover: Initial Analysis of the Image Cubes of the Onboard Visible and Near‐Infrared Imaging Spectrometer

Abstract: China's Chang'E-4 (CE-4), which is the first probe to land on the lunar farside, has been working stably for over 2 years since its touching down on 3 January 2019. The Yutu-2 rover of CE-4 has traveled over 700 m across the floor of Von Kármán crater until the end of its 29th lunar day (Figure S1 in Supporting Information S1). In order to analyze the surface materials along the path, a Visible and Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer (VNIS) is mounted on the front of Yutu-2 rover. A number of surface soil spect… Show more

“…Of all the acquired lunar spectra, the spatial resolution of in situ detection is higher than that of remote sensing. The reflectance spectra calculated from the inflight calibration unit can represent the absolute reflectance of the lunar surface, provide “ground truth” for remote sensing detection (Y. Wu & Hapke, 2018), and reveal more details about the surface on a smaller scale (Wang et al., 2022).…”

“…During Yutu-2's expedition of the first 41 lunar days, it has been navigating towards the northwest (Fig. 1b) for 1142.39 m until 8 April 2022, and investigated several exposed rock fragments [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] along the route. An olivine-norite rock was detected on the 3rd lunar day, and shed light on the composition of the lunar interior and the lunar magma ocean (LMO) crystallization 24 .…”
