Dynamic centrifuge tests of concrete dam

Abstract: SUMMARYDynamic tests of a concrete gravity dam are, for the ÿrst time, performed inside a centrifuge. Details of the experimental procedure, data interpretation, and results are presented. It is shown (in conjunction with a parallel paper) that these tests cannot only provide a direct assessment of certain aspects of dam safety, but more importantly provide a data base for possible non-linear ÿnite element code validation.

“…In the scaling process of the test specimen, the stress and strain values are scaled independently whereas the fracture energy of the concrete was scaled by the reciprocal of the scale, that is, 1/75 [17]. The strength increase of concrete as a result of rapid loading cannot be obtained during the PsD test due to the slow nature of this testing procedure.…”

“…However, the concrete strength was adjusted such that the static tensile strength of the scaled model matches the dynamic tensile strength of the actual dam section under high loading rates. In the scaling process of the test specimen, the stress and strain values are scaled independently whereas the fracture energy of the concrete was scaled by the reciprocal of the scale, that is, 1/75 [17]. Therefore, the fracture process zone of the concrete should be reduced to decrease the fracture energy [17,27].…”

“…Previous endeavors included shake table tests 8 as well as centrifuge tests 9 on small‐scale dam models. In shake table tests, reduced‐scale dam models are subjected to dynamic excitations based on similitude principles.…”
