Abstract: Recent literature suggests that when foams are properly engineered using the advances of in situ analysis techniques, the enhancement of topical drug delivery via engineering this type of vehicle can be achieved.

“…In general, the polymeric blend can be easily tuned using adequate proportions of cross-linking agents in order to obtain a material library, AC x indeed, able to accomplish different drug delivery needs [20,21]. In particular, here the AC1 hydrogel was investigated as drug carriers for local delivery purposes of Sodium Fluorescein (SF), a good and commonly used drug-mimetic molecule [20,26,27]. In fact, SF shows steric hindrance and molecular structure similar to many corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs (for example methyl prednisone and β-estradiol), which are regularly used in pharmacotherapy to ameliorate SCI secondary effects and central nervous system (CNS) damage [9,19,28].…”

“…Together with the new MF formulations, Clobetasol Propionate (CP) shampoo has been developed for short-term contact therapy of inflammatory scalp conditions [36]. CP and betamethasone valerate are also available as foams [37]. This pharmaceutical formulation has improved cosmetic acceptance although it is at greater risk of inducing skin irritation, especially in patients with atopic dermatitis, due to the lack of adequate emollient properties and to some alcoholic ingredients, such as stearyl-and cetyl-alcohol or ethanol.…”

“…Within the field of topical drug delivery, recent years have witnessed growing interest in the design, development and usage of foam-based formulations [3][4][5][6]. These foams are essentially gas-in-liquid dispersions, in which the gas volume fraction usually ranges between 0.5 and 0.9.…”
