a Molecular imprinting technology (MIT), often described as a method of making a molecular lock to match a molecular key, is a technique for the creation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with tailor-made binding sites complementary to the template molecules in shape, size and functional groups. Owing to their unique features of structure predictability, recognition specificity and application universality, MIPs have found a wide range of applications in various fields. Herein, we propose to comprehensively review the recent advances in molecular imprinting including versatile perspectives and applications, concerning novel preparation technologies and strategies of MIT, and highlight the applications of MIPs. The fundamentals of MIPs involving essential elements, preparation procedures and characterization methods are briefly outlined.Smart MIT for MIPs is especially highlighted including ingenious MIT (surface imprinting, nanoimprinting, etc.), special strategies of MIT (dummy imprinting, segment imprinting, etc.) and stimuli-responsive MIT (single/dual/ multi-responsive technology). By virtue of smart MIT, new formatted MIPs gain popularity for versatile applications, including sample pretreatment/chromatographic separation (solid phase extraction, monolithic column chromatography, etc.) and chemical/biological sensing (electrochemical sensing, fluorescence sensing, etc.). Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and future perspectives to accelerate the development of MIT, and to utilize it for further developing versatile MIPs with a wide range of applications (650 references).

a b s t r a c tA modified Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) method based on the dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the determination of non-steroidal estrogens in water samples. In this study, graphene oxide-based silica microspheres (SiO 2 @GO) were used as dSPE material for the preconcentration of analytes. HPLC was used for the separation and detection. This was the first time that the synthesized SiO 2 @GO microspheres were used as stationary phases for the off-line preconcentration of the non-steroidal estrogens in dSPE. dSPE parameters, such as sample pH, volume and type of eluent were optimized. Application of the developed method to analyze spiked lake, reservoir and tap water samples resulted in good recoveries values ranging from 70 to 106% with relative standard deviation values lower than 7.0% in all cases. Limits of detection were in the range of 0.2-6.1 g/L. The combined data obtained in this study recommended that the proposed method is very fast, simple, repeatable and accurate for the detection of non-steroidal estrogens. Furthermore, the SiO 2 @GO microspheres application could potentially be expanded to extract and pre-concentrate other compounds in various matrices.

ResumoOs polímeros de impressão molecular são materiais sintéticos dotados de sítios específicos de reconhecimento. Esses materiais são obtidos por reações de polimerização que fixam, estrategicamente, monômeros funcionais ao redor de uma molécula modelo de acordo com os grupos ligantes e com a estereoquímica de ambas as moléculas. Os MIPs têm sido amplamente empregados em procedimentos de preparo de amostras, como extração e microextração em fase sólida, extração sortiva em barra de agitação, extração com adsorvente magnético, microextração com sorvente empacotado, entre outras. Este artigo de revisão tem como objetivo apresentar o que há de mais recente no emprego de MIP para extração de compostos orgânicos, evidenciando as vantagens de cada aplicação, bem como as mais promissoras tendências que sustentam a evolução e o aperfeiçoamento de cada técnica. The MIPs have been extensively used in several applications with emphasis for sample preparation procedures as solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, extraction by magnetic sorbents, microextraction by packed sorbent among others. So, the objective of this review is to present the novelty in MIP use for organic compounds extraction and point out the advantages of each application, as well as what is most promising in the evolution and improvement of each technique.
