Dynamic Process Model Validation and Control of the Amine Plant at CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad

Abstract: This paper presents a set of steady-state and transient data for dynamic process model validation of the chemical absorption process with monoethanolamine (MEA) for post-combustion CO 2 capture of exhaust gas from a natural gas-fired power plant. The data selection includes a wide range of steady-state operating conditions and transient tests. A dynamic process model developed in the open physical modeling language Modelica is validated. The model is utilized to evaluate the open-loop transient performance at … Show more

“…Studies that investigate dynamic or exible operation in pilot plants will be essential. There are a growing number of publications that report ndings from dynamic/exible operation testing at various pilot plants: (i) CSIRO's CO 2 capture pilot plant at Loy Yang power station (Australia) [23,24], (ii) pilot-scale facilities of Sulzer Chemtech (Switzerland) [25], (iii) Brindisi capture pilot plant (Italy) [26,27,28], (iv) UKCCSRC PACT pilot plant (United Kingdom) [29,30], (v) TCM CO 2 capture plant (Norway) [31,32,33]. Some of these provide useful experimental pilot plant datasets that can be used for dynamic model validation [26,27,24,22].…”

“…Both the absorber and stripper employed the Sulzer BX structured packing. [12,25,28,29]. Recently, the authors of this paper [30] developed a rate-based dynamic model for the MEA (monoethanolamine) solvent PCC process on the Aspen Custom Modeler ® (ACM) software platform [31].…”

“…Montañés et al [11] linked dynamic models of power plant, gas turbine, steam turbine, and PCC process to study the load-change transient performance of a commercial-scale natural gas combined cycle power plant. The power plant model was validated against steady-state data, and the PCC model was validated using steady-state and transient data from a large-scale amine pilot plant [12]. Five control schemes of PCC were evaluated for the change of gas turbine load from 100% to 70% with different ramp rate.…”
