Dynamic Range Improvement in Bistatic Backscatter Communication Using Distributed MIMO

Abstract: Backscatter communication (BSC) is a promising solution for Internet-of-Things (IoT) connections due to its lowcomplexity, low-cost, and energy-efficient solution for sensors. There are several network infrastructure setups that can be used for BSC with IoT nodes/passive devices. One of them is a bistatic setup where there is a need for high dynamic range and high-resolution analog-to-digital converters at the reader side. In this paper, we investigate a bistatic BSC setup with multiple antennas. We propose a … Show more

“…• Using the derived GLRT detector, we analyze the performance of BD symbol detection at the reader in a BiBC setup with multiple antennas. Parts of the results in this paper were presented in [1]. The main difference between this paper and [1] is that herein all channels of a bistatic link are treated as unknown, whereas [1] assumes that the reader has perfect channel state information.…”

“…Parts of the results in this paper were presented in [1]. The main difference between this paper and [1] is that herein all channels of a bistatic link are treated as unknown, whereas [1] assumes that the reader has perfect channel state information. As a result, novel algorithms for channel estimation are proposed in this paper which are necessary to detect the BD symbol/presence based on the GLRT.…”

“…In particular, [16] modifies the tag architecture to adjust the circuit load impedance of the tag to extend the communication range and lower the integrated circuit (IC) power consumption. The works [17], [18] develop interference cancellation schemes to suppress the direct link interference from the RF source, thereby improving the tag's rate. [17] uses beamforming to nullify the direct link interference, while [18] explores the joint design of waveform at the RF source and coding at the tag to mitigate the direct link interference.…”
