Dynamic visual acuity: Normative functions and practical implications

Abstract: The dynamic visual acuity (DVA) of 52 college students was determined for three target velocities (60°,90°, and 120°per sec) at each of two target durations and two luminance levels. Although all observers were prescreened for 20/20 acuity, widely differing DVA scores were found across observers under identical stimulus conditions. No relationship between DVA scores and contrast sensitivity scores was revealed. The often overlooked role of DVA in everyday activities is reiterated, and the potential utility of … Show more

“…However, the correlation between DVA and SVA was not significant, according to a different study (63), probably because SVA is related to the discriminative ability of the eye, whereas DVA is related to VOR function. It is common to find significant individual differences in DVA in subjects with similar SVA (64).…”

“…Slide Task. A facsimile of the traditional DVA device used by Miller and Ludvigh in the 50's (and by Long in the 80's [e.g., Long & Penn, 1987;Long & Rourke, 1989) was constructed. This device uses Landolt C optotypes which are projected onto a mirror which is affixed to a rotating post and these targets are then delivered to a large (1.5 meter radius) highly reflective (>80%) curved white screen via a slide projector.…”
