Dynamical axions and gravitational waves

Abstract: In this paper we explore the possibility of observable gravitational waves as a manifestation of the QCD axion dynamics. In particular, we focus on dynamical axion models which solve the strong CP problem, and include the confinement of a QCD-like gauge group at the TeV scale. We study the resulting chiral symmetry breaking phase transition for models with N F = 3 and N F = 4 light flavors using the linear sigma model. This model describes the scalar meson spectrum and its interactions, with the diagonal field… Show more

“…An analytic argument by Pisarski and Wilczek in 1983 [291] determines the confining phase transition to be first order for N F ≥ 3 light quark flavors at the time of confinement. 3 Hidden sector confinement has been studied recently in the context of dark quark nuggets [293], as well as solutions to the strong CP problem [294,295]. Models of confinement invariably predict states around the confinement scale, as well as lighter pions.…”

“…This possibility opens up new regions of the parameter space on the m 2 a , f a plane. Interesting models implementing the mechanism of [12] were proposed in [14][15][16][17][18], applications to models of inflation were studied in [19]. Other approaches to modify the axion mass within QCD were proposed in [20][21][22][23] while in [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] the axion mass is raised by coupling it to a new confining gauge group.…”

“…In the absence of a reliable effective field theory description of chiral symmetry breaking at the scales of interest, the gravitational wave spectra can be studied using the linear-sigma model as a low-energy effective theory, with finite-temperature corrections from meson loops [36][37][38] or using interpolating models such as the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model [38]. However, such models are known to fall short for the case of QCD, and the resulting GW spectrum is subject to very large uncertainties.…”
