Rostoft et al (2002) used a ball catching task with 4 year-old children and showed hysteresis for hand selection; which hand was used for catching was sensitive to the direction in which balls were delivered (leftward or rightward), biased in favor of using the same hand according to recent history. Likewise, Weiss and Wark (2009) studied cotton-top tamarins and showed hysteresis for hand selection according to the progressive direction of presentation of food items for grasping.…”

“…It is unlikely that skill alone accounts for this age difference: When thrown a ball from different directions scaled from the extreme right to the extreme left, 4-year-old children use their preferred right hand up to a well-defined position located to the left of the midline. Less-skilled children tend to use their preferred right hand more than the more skilled ones to catch the balls delivered to the left (Rostoft, Sigmundsson, Whiting, & Ingvaldsen, 2002); however, the developmental age trend in crossing the body midline is not linear: Six-to 11-yearold children use their preferred right hand even in the left hemispace more consistently than 3-to 7-year-olds, but also more consistently than adults . As for adults, left-handers do not respond with their preferred hand as consistently across positions as righthanders .…”
