Dynamics of obesity in Finland

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to study empirically the dynamics of obesity in Finland and provide empirical evidence of temporal causality between obesity, health expenditure, unemployment, urbanization, alcohol consumption and calorie intake. The paper employs bounds testing cointegration procedure and augmented causality tests. The empirical results suggest the existence of cointegration amongst the variables. Augmented Granger causality tests indicate the existence of a long-run causality as well as three… Show more

“…A sedentary lifestyle coupled with consumption of high-calorie foods could cause excessive body weight (Gulle et al , 2014; Pieterman, 2015). The issue tended to worsen with the excessive consumption of fast and convenience foods (Halicioglu, 2013), as well as a high intake of tobacco and alcohol. This had not only led to more overweight and obese people but also increased the blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipids among the population in Southeast Asia (World Health Organization, 2011).…”

“…Obesity involves an interaction of both genetic and environmental factors (such as behavioral, social, cultural, physiological) that can singly or synergistically contribute to its pathogenesis [2]. Fundamentally, obesity represents a phenotypic consequence of an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended in favor of caloric intake [3]. These results may be due to increased consumption of energy-dense foods that are high in fat combined with decreased physical activity as a result of increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, transport, and urbanization [4].…”
