Dynamics of the Apple Fruit Microbiome after Harvest and Implications for Fruit Quality

Abstract: The contribution of the apple microbiome to the production chain of apple was so far largely unknown. Here, we describe the apple fruit microbiome and influences on its composition by parameters such as storage season, storage duration, storage technology, apple variety, and plant protection schemes. A combined culturing and metabarcoding approach revealed significant differences in the abundance, composition, and diversity of the apple fruit microbiome. We showed that relatively few genera contribute a large … Show more

“…(Toivonen and Brummell, 2008), and all these events potentially influence the dynamics of the fruit microbiome. Sustained low temperatures during storage can also exert a profound effect on fruit microbiome dynamics, with previous studies reporting a general decrease in diversity and fluctuations in the relative abundance of microbial taxa in stored apples (Bösch et al, 2021). As such, incorporating information of these fruit physiological parameters and their influence on the fruit microbiome will provide a more comprehensive picture of the factors shaping the ecology and dynamics of fruit-associated microbiome, and we acknowledge the lack of this information as a limitation in the present study.…”

“…The fruit surface of the domesticated apple ( Malus × domestica Borkh.) has been reported to be naturally colonized by numerous microbes that vary in abundance and diversity according to host genotype, geographical location, management practices, and fruit tissue type ( Wassermann et al, 2019a , b ; Abdelfattah et al, 2020 , 2021 ; Bösch et al, 2021 ). Little is known, however, about the ecological processes, particularly with regard to selection, that regulate temporal carposphere microbial dynamics.…”

“…structure and diversity of apple fruit, including tissuespecific differences (Abdelfattah et al, 2016(Abdelfattah et al, , 2021, management practices (Abdelfattah et al, 2016;Bösch et al, 2021;Britt et al, 2021), geographical location (Abdelfattah et al, 2021), post-harvest treatment (Abdelfattah et al, 2020), genotype/cultivar, growing season, storage duration, and storage atmosphere (Bösch et al, 2021;Britt et al, 2021). However, most of T A B L E 4 Differentially represented genera between growing seasons (2019, 2020) in core and peel tissues which were found to contain potential pathogens, symbionts, or parasites.…”

“…It is interesting to note that metabolites released by the fruits could modulate the diversity of the microbiome (Miguel et al, 2013). Hot-water treatment (HWT) is used at postharvest stage in certain crops to reduce pathogen infections and prolong shelf life (Bösch et al, 2021;Li et al, 2013;Papoutsis et al, 2019;Singh & Sharma, 2018;Zhang et al, 2017). The influence of HWT on the microbiome of stored apples was studied by Wassermann, Kusstatscher, et al (2019).…”

“…This indicates the need for cold packing of apples in a limited time to reduce the risk of adverse health effects to consumers. Washing and waxing procedures were also reported to influence the microbiome organization of the fruits (Bösch et al., 2021). Further research is expected to confirm these findings on different fruits (Shen et al., 2018).…”
