Dynamics, order, and molecular conformation of micellar zwitterionic (decyldimethylammonio)propane sulfonate

Abstract: The so-called two-step model has been applied to multifield 13C relaxation and NOE data to determine order parameters and correlation times of (decyldimethylammonio)propanesulfonate (DAPS) in pure and octanol-swollen DAPS micelles. Additional conformational information was obtained from 13C shift measurements above and below the critical micellization concentration. The combined results indicate that the zwitterionic headgroup is motionally restricted as compared to micellized ionic surfactant headgroups and t… Show more

“…61,62 Upfield shift for C 12 of SDS in 100% methanol agreed with those of hexanol and octanol. 66 In Table 5, the DLS results for the self-assemblies of SDS formed in Dn−W and Ml−W media along with their critical packing parameter (P c ) and N agg are presented. Both the assembly size (hydrodynamic radius, R H ) and N agg decreased with increasing volume percentage of Dn and Ml.…”

“…The zwitterionic surfactant (decy1dimethylammonio)propyl sulphate (DAPS) has a bulky head group and shows a similar behaviour. 26 The effect has been ascribed by Jansson et ~1 .~~ to motional constraints caused by anchoring of the head group to the interface. The value of S for C-2 of OAXS is large (0.38), which implies a very high degree of ordering.…”

“…26 that a 'high-frequency nucleus' such as carbon is inherently insensitive to the slower motions of the micelle. The explanation for this insensitivity arises from the spectral density terms in the expression for R,, where the highfrequency term predominates.…”

“…As the hydrophilic head groups are "anchored" at the micellar surface", NMR-studies show that the mobility and the order parameter decreases along the alkyl tail from its end towards the head group [379][380][381][382][383][384][385].…”
