Early and Midterm Outcomes of Rheumatic Mitral Valve Repair

Abstract: Background: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the leading cause of mitral valve disease in the developing world. In general, mitral valve repair is preferred over replacement. Although it is very successful in degenerative disease, its results in the rheumatic valve are not as successful as that for degenerative repair. Our approach has been to repair rheumatic mitral valves when the anatomic substrate appears to permit it, and we aimed by this study to present our immediate and midterm follow-ups of our cohort… Show more

“…Title and abstract screening of the remaining 756 papers led to further exclusion of 675 papers that did not meet our eligibility criteria. Subsequently following full text screening of the 81 papers, only 31 papers were included in the study that met our eligibility criteria 16–46 . The screening process is shown in the PRISMA flow chart in Figure 1.…”

“…Surgical anatomy of the mitral valve as it applies to valve repair has been well described [17]. TEE is essential to establish the aetiology, mechanism, location, and severity of the regurgitation [18,19]. In addition, TEE also recognizes associated pathology such as ventricular dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) which may have an impact on coming off the CPB.…”
