Early environmental quality and life-course mental health effects: The Equal-Life project

Abstract: Only the results of Equal-Life (e.g. aggregated data not traceable to individuals, algorithms and scientific findings relevant to policy makers) will be made publicly accessible and will be part of the evidence-based guidance to be developed in the project. All cohort data, school data and sub-study data used and collected in Equal-Life will stay with their owners and will be linked to the exposome data and will only be aggregated at result level. Thereby, we will ensure that all work carried out in Equal-Life … Show more

“…In total, we curated 385 environmental exposures under the concept of the Equal-Life project 42 from multiple sources and group them into 12 domains. Air pollution exposures came from the annual average air quality of each observation station from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.…”

“…We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of the early environmental quality and life-course mental health effects (Equal-Life) project team and the laboratory assistance of Mirka Tikkanen. Equal-Life is part of the European Human Exposome Network comprehensively described by van Kamp et al [ 55 ].…”

“…The domain of the external exposome comprised a total of 65 exposures derived from two sources: Equal-life project (van Kamp et al, 2022) enrichment datasets and Statistics Finland. We used twin's geocodes in 2005-2006 to merge the exposures, which were extensively described elsewhere (Wang et al, 2023).…”

“…The specific external exposome includes specific environmental factors such as diet, occupational exposures and lifestyle factors (Debord et al, 2017). In the context of this paper, we distinguish between the internal and external exposome, the latter including social and physical exposomes (van Kamp et al, 2022) but not lifestyle. Finally, environmental imprints on omic profiles are commonly classified as part of the internal exposome, as omics data has been shown to be highly sensitive to the environment, and genetic factors only explain part of their variance.…”
