In this article, we discuss the issue of the authenticity of contemporary yogas of non-Indian matrices, specifically, five Brazilian yogic perspectives . Several new Indian trade schools emerged in the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, the so-called modern yoga and its types emerged. These are spiritual movements that, although contain traditional beliefs and practices, deviate from the previous yogic matrices. Modern yogis, in turn, transplant their spiritual schools to geographies far from the Hindu canopy, such as Europe and the USA. Meanwhile, these transplanted modern yogas originate from other yogic denominations, which we here call Contemporary Yogas or Neo-Yogas , are deviations from traditional or Modern Yogas. The yogas that exist in Brazil are examples of contemporary spiritual perspectives produced by singular syncretisms and hybridisms within the Brazilian cultural and religious context. We conclude to conceive the investigated Contemporary Yogas , upheld by non-Indian authorities, as can be understood as legitimate and possible New Spiritual Movements or deviations from modern yoga with new beliefs and practices.

In this article, we design a preliminary genealogy of yoga in Italy, showing its positioning within the growing field of “contemporary spiritualities”, their premodern, esoteric and theosophical roots and Catholicism. Our main claim is that yoga and contemporary spiritualities as practiced in XXI-century Italy are neither entirely new nor are they clearly an alternative to more established religions. We rely on the methods and tools of a “discursive study of religion” approach to unpack the intricacies, genealogical roots and definitional boundaries that yoga, contemporary spiritualities and religion in Italy share. More specifically, we question the novelty of contemporary spiritualities in Italy, unveiling some of their esoteric, theosophical and anthroposophical roots, presenting, in turn, a preliminary genealogy of yoga in Italy, discussing its positioning amid Catholicism and contemporary spiritualities. We conclude by reflecting on the creation, use and limits of sociocultural theorizing about interpreting and understanding the spiritual and religious field, with a specific emphasis on the overlapping and porous boundaries between the concepts of religion, contemporary spiritualities, Western esotericism and modern yoga.

Yoga studies have inaugurated a vast amount of possible research areas that transcend the regional and the disciplinary. This paper probes into the history and reception of yoga in Latin America. In particular, it discusses the ways in which a post-revolutionary Mexican intellectual, José Vasconcelos, understood yoga in the 1920s. This early understanding of yoga was a combination of both socio-political discourses worldwide and the nationalist enterprise of building a modern nation, where notions of race, identity, and cleanliness were paramount. Through different writings, Vasconcelos interpreted both South Asian religions and the Americas as beneficial influences for the betterment of humanity. By noting the influence of different ideologies popular in Latin America (such as nationalisms, Social Darwinism, or Theosophy), this paper analyses the cultural context against which Vasconcelos outlined his understanding of yoga, India, national culture and progress.
