Early Maladaptive Schemas in Eating Disordered Patients With or Without Non‐Suicidal Self‐Injury

Abstract: This study investigates early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) in function of eating disorder (ED) subtypes (restrictive/bulimic) and the presence/absence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Female inpatients (N = 491) completed the Young Schema Questionnaire and the Self-Injury Questionnaire. The influence of ED subtype and the presence/absence of NSSI and their interaction on the EMS were investigated by means of a MANCOVA. The results showed main effects of ED subtype and the presence of NSSI on EMS. Patients wit… Show more

“…In accordance with various studies among patients with a primary diagnosis of bulimia nervosa, the current study showed that disconnection/rejection predicted the presence of ED among patients with BPD (Pauwels, Dierckx, Schoevaerts, & Claes, ; Unoka, Tölgyes, Czobor, & Simon, ). Unlike these other studies, we did not find that impaired limits (usually associated with trait impulsivity) predicted this type of comorbidity among BPD patients.…”

“…First, previous research has focused on differences between ED subtypes but the current study did not. According to some research (Unoka et al, ; Waller et al, ), diagnostic subgroups differ on certain maladaptive core beliefs (e.g., Leung et al, ; Pauwels, Dierckx, Schoevaerts, & Claes, ). The current study was unable to investigate differences across ED subtypes, as the majority of the clinical sample had an AN‐R diagnosis.…”

“…These EMSs have been studied for years and have been linked not only to a compromised quality of life and social functioning in participants but also to a poor treatment outcome in patient populations (Pinto‐Gouveia, Castilho, Galhardo, & Cunha, ; Riso et al, ). A growing body of evidence exists on the presence of EMSs in ED and their clinical importance (Legenbauer, Radix, Augustat, & Schütt‐Strömel, ), but it is still not clear how interventions on EMSs can produce stable modifications of these cognitive distortions (Boone, Braet, Vandereycken, & Claes, ; Damiano, Reece, Reid, Atkins, & Patton, ; Jones, Harris, & Leung, ; Pauwels et al, ; Pauwels, Dierckx, Schoevaerts, & Claes, ).…”
