Early Salt Stress Effects on the Changes in Chemical Composition in Leaves of Ice Plant and Arabidopsis. A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Study

Abstract: A technique based on Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry was developed to detect the corresponding changes in chemical composition associated with the rapid changes in sodium and water content in 200 mm NaCl-stressed halophyte ice plants (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum). The changes in glycophyte Arabidopsis stressed with 50 mm NaCl were also examined for comparison. The obtained IR spectra were further processed by deconvolution and curve fitting to examine the chemical nature of the responding sou… Show more

“…To confirm this, we have also measured the bandwidth value of the mode. The highest increase in this value for 2.0 mg l -1 among the applied concentrations of BAP reflects a more fluid membrane (Yang and Yen, 2002;Cakmak et al, 2011). It has been reported by Los et al (2013) that changes in membrane fluidity leads to activity changes or activation of membrane-bound enzymes, ion channels, and receptors.…”

“…As shown in Table 2, the area of this band is increased for all treated groups, but it is significant only for 2 mg l -1 . This might be resulted from an increment in the concentration of polysaccharides and proteins containing N-H and O-H molecules (Yang and Yen, 2002;Toyran et al, 2004;Suryawanshi et al, 2015).…”

“…FTIR is employed to elucidate the structure of unknown composition and the intensity of absorption spectra associated with molecular composition or content of respective chemical functional groups (Bobby et al 2012). FTIR has been used to identify the complicated structures of plant secondary metabolites and in the characterization of bacterial, fungal and plant species (Hori and Sugiyama 2003;Yang and Yen 2002). Advocating FTIR method to determine the spectral variations of targeted metabolites of GLVs would have implications in their post-harvest processing.…”
