Early treatment ofClassIIImalocclusion with facemask therapy

Abstract: The facemask is a widely used device in the treatment of Class III malocclusion and is intended to anteriorly displace the superior maxilla or stimulate its growth in that direction. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of treatment using orthopedic maxillary expansion with facemask therapy in patients with Class III malocclusion. Sixty‐four patients, with a mean age of 8.14 ± 1.18 years at the start of treatment and a mean age of 9.78 ± 1.19 years at the end, were treated using orthopedic m… Show more

“…After duplicate removal and screening of titles/abstracts against the predefined eligibility criteria (Supplementary Materials S4), the full texts of 104 papers were checked. Eventually, 10 papers pertaining to 9 unique studies (1 prospective and 9 retrospective nonrandomized studies; Table 1), which were published as journal papers, were finally included [8,11,12,[28][29][30][31][32][33][34].…”

“…It can be used in moderate cases as in Group B with less tendency of relapse and without need for bone grafting. However, this technique needs a secondary surgical removal of the device [11], [24], [25]. In this investigation, we used bone-borne devices that anchored to the zygomatic bone, similar to Van Stickles et al [26], who used a bone-borne distractor for anterior hypoplastic maxillary advancement in cleft patients to correct Class III malocclusion.…”

“…Reverse headgear or facemask therapy is believed to be widely used modality in correcting skeletal class III, which can displace the maxillary apparatus anteriorly and stimulate its growth in the given direction. 16 Foersch et al emphasized that the use of maxillary expansion devices enhanced the maxillary development and also there was improved results in the sagittal effect, when facemask was used along with expansion devices, rather than facemask therapy used alone. 17 This contributed to the fact that midpalatal expansion affects circum-maxillary sutures alongside the palatine sutures.…”

“…17 This contributed to the fact that midpalatal expansion affects circum-maxillary sutures alongside the palatine sutures. Menéndez-Díaz et al 16 studied the effectiveness of orthopedic facemask with maxillary expansion for treatment of skeletal class III in growing patients and he emphasized that skeletal changes were found to be stable for a period of 18 months alongside maintaining the overjet and molar relationship. 18,19 Case 2 describes a patient with minimum amount of growth potential available.…”
