Background The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is a frequently used scale to evaluate eating behaviors and attitudes. In recent years, its use has increased due to the fact that the use of short forms is more practical. The aim of this study was to validate the short Turkish form of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) including 13 items. Methods The study included 924 adults at a mean age of 30.3 ± 10.93 years. EDEQ-13 was translated and adapted to Turkish according to the Beaton Guidelines. The Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) were used to analyze their relationships to EDE-Q-13. Results In this study, the rate of the total variance explained by the factors of EDE-Q-13 according to the Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) results of the scale was 83.54%. The Cronbach's alpha value of the scale was 0.89, and the Cronbach's alpha values of the 5 subscales were calculated in the range of 0.75–0.94. The criterion validity analysis showed an acceptable correlation between EDE-Q-13 and EAT-26, SWLS, and BAS. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed that the model had fit values that were acceptable or good. Conclusion Both EFA and CFA results showed that it is appropriate to use the Turkish EDE-Q-13. EDE-Q-13 was significantly correlated with eating disturbances, body appreciation, and life satisfaction. In conclusion, the Turkish version of EDE-Q-13 possesses high levels of validity and reliability.

Objective: The main aim was to perform a systematic literature review of studies investigating the factor structure of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q), a widely used measure of eating pathology. Secondary aims were to summarize the quality of reporting of latent variable (factor) analyses in these studies and review support for different factor solutions.Method: Literature was identified through Scopus, Medline, PsycInfo, and ProQuest databases published up to February 23, 2022 and outreach via an international listserv. All studies published in English reporting factor analysis of the EDE-Q were included with few restrictions. Sixty studies including 63,389 participants met inclusion criteria. Results:The originally proposed four-factor solution received little empirical support, although few alternative models have been robustly evaluated. Items assessing shape and weight concerns frequently coalesce in factor solutions, suggesting that these constructs are closely related. Investigations of brief versions of the EDE-Q have produced more consistent findings, suggesting that these measures, particularly a sevenitem version, might be useful alternatives to the full version. Quality of studies was reasonable, with important methodological elements of factor analysis often reported.Discussion: The findings are of relevance to practitioners and researchers, suggesting that the "original" factor structure of the EDE-Q should be reconsidered and that use of a seven-item version is to be encouraged.Public Significance: Self-report questionnaires are widely used in the assessment of disordered eating. The current study found that there is little consensus about the structure of a common measure of eating psychopathology. There is more consistent support for a brief, seven-item, version assessing dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, and overvaluation of weight and shape. Research suggests that a disproportionate number of female individuals being treated for an eating disorder (ED) also have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Alexithymia, or difficulty identifying and describing emotions, may mediate the relationship between ED and ASD. In this study, we explored the association of autistic traits with symptoms of alexithymia and eating pathology, as well as the potential mediating role of alexithymia. Two hundred and twenty‐eight female participants aged 18 and older were recruited from online ED support platforms to complete an anonymous online survey via Qualtrics. The survey included three questionnaires: the Toronto Alexithymia Scale‐20, the Autism‐Spectrum Quotient (AQ), and the 13‐item Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. More than half (54.8%) of participants met the clinical threshold on the AQ. Participants with a positive screen on the AQ scale also reported more symptoms of alexithymia (92.6% of individuals with a positive AQ vs. 79.8% of those without), B = 9.02, p < 0.001. A positive AQ screen was also associated with significantly greater disordered eating symptoms, B = 4.26, p = 0.031. Alexithymia mediated this association, a × b = 1.98, p < 0.05. The results establish a strong positive relationship between autistic traits and alexithymia, supporting previous data and suggesting that autistic female individuals struggle to identify emotions. Additionally, alexithymia served as a mediator between autistic traits and disordered eating. Understanding this relationship may help inform the treatment of autistic female individuals who are also struggling with ED.
