Purpose: The aim is to examine the applications to the paediatric emergency service of Foundation University Hospital in Ankara according to variables: gender, age, season of application, diagnosis, number of consultations and hospitalizations, and triage codes. Materials and methods: The research is a retrospective descriptive study. The data of patients admitted to the paediatric emergency department of a hospital in Ankara between 01.08.2017-31.07.2018 were obtained (n=16383). Frequency, percentages, cross table, and chi-square test were used for comparison. Findings: 0% of patients: very urgent application, 19%: urgent and 81%: non-urgent. The most common first three diagnoses: “unknown origin fever”, “cough”, "nausea and vomiting”. The 0-28 days age group had the lowest number of applications with 5% and had the highest emergency triage status with 66.5%; and the 19 months-5 years age group had the highest number of applications with 49% and had the lowest emergency triage rate with 12.8%.Conclusion: The reasons for applying to PES may differ according to contextual variables and providing parents with information from reliable sources may reduce unnecessary anxiety and emergency service admissions. There should be strengthened primary health care services and referral system to maintain high-quality emergency services.

Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the admissions to our pediatric emergency department, the diagnoses, the followups and treatments, contributing to plannings to be organized for timely and appropriate interventions. Methods: In this study, 46756 patients who admitted to the pediatric emergency department of our hospital as an outpatient or via ambulance were included to be evaluated retrospectively by age range, gender, time of admission, frequency of admissions by months, the complaint of emergency department admission, the diagnosis made and whether they were hospitalized in an inpatient ward. Results: In this study, 54% of the patients were male and the rest of the patients were female. Evaluated by seasons, it was determined that the maximum number of admissions, in descending order, were in winter and spring months, and the minimum number of admissions, however, were in summer and autumn months. During the day, the busiest time of the pediatric emergency department was between 16:00-00:00. The most commonly made diagnosis in the pediatric emergency department in all months during the whole year was determined to be upper respiratory tract infection (34.9%, n: 16060), followed by lower respiratory tract infections with a rate of 19.5%. Among all patients, the number of cases for which a forensic report was issued, however, was determined to be 1.5%. The hospitalization rate of all patients was determined to be 10.7%. 3099 (61.8%) of a total of 5013 hospitalized patients were hospitalized in the pediatric emergency department observation unit, where their treatments were completed. Discussion and Conclusion: Pediatric emergency departments, which will serve under appropriate conditions and opportunities, by which unnecessary admissions and hospitalizations will be reduced, and in which shorter observations will be made, would be able to provide services of better quality, reduce the number of unnecessary tests and allow effective intervention.

Objectives: Overcrowding in pediatric emergency departments negatively affects the quality of care. Investigating the characteristics of the patients admitted to PEDs will provide valuable information to increase the satisfaction of patients and healthcare staff. This research aimed to investigate the characteristics of pediatric emergency patients in a foundation university hospital in Ankara. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive, single-center, cross-sectional study, which was conducted with 6550 patients who were admitted to the pediatric emergency department of a foundation university hospital in Ankara, and got diagnosed with one of the 15 most common diseases between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2018. The associations between the demographics and clinical features of the patients and their diagnoses were evaluated. For comparisons, frequencies, percentages, crosstabs, and chi-square tests were used. Results: While none of the patients had a red triage level, 19% had a yellow triage level, and 81% had a green triage level. The three most common diagnoses were fever of unknown origin, cough, and nausea and vomiting. Despite the 0–28 days of age group having the lowest admission rate of 5%, they had the highest usage rate of yellow triage level (66.5%). However, it was the opposite for the 19 months to 5 years of age group with the highest rate of admissions of 49% and the lowest usage rate of yellow triage level (12.8%). Conclusion: The reasons for admitting to pediatric emergency department differ according to some contextual variables. Being aware of the current situation is the first step in planning for better pediatric emergency service.
