Echolocation call production during aerial and terrestrial locomotion by New Zealand's enigmatic lesser short-tailed bat,Mystacina tuberculata

Abstract: SUMMARYLinkage of echolocation call production with contraction of flight muscles has been suggested to reduce the energetic cost of flight with echolocation, such that the overall cost is approximately equal to that of flight alone. However, the pattern of call production with limb movement in terrestrially agile bats has never been investigated. We used synchronised high-speed video and audio recordings to determine patterns of association between echolocation call production and limb motion by Mystacina tub… Show more

“…This bat is specialised to forage on the ground and along tree branches. When hunting on substrate, it continues to emit ultrasound as well as incidental sound of movement through leaf litter (Jones et al, 2003;Parsons et al, 2010). This incidental sound is audible to weta (Lomas, 2007).…”

“…In addition, flight and echolocation interact in ways that are relevant for the evolution of size in bats, and vice versa. For instance, synchronization of echolocation call emission and wingbeat (specifically, the downstroke) enables bats to echolocate at search-phase frequency with no additional cost while flying (e.g., Speakman and Racey 1991;Jones 1999;Parsons et al 2010). This coupling likely represents an important selective pressure on size to keep both flight and echolocation costs as low as possible (Speakman and Racey 1991).…”
