Eclalbatin, a Triterpene Saponin fromEclipta Alba

Abstract: From the whole plant of Eclipta alba, a new triterpene saponin, named eclalbatin, together with alpha-amyrin, ursolic acid and oleanolic acid were isolated. The structure of eclalbatin has been established as 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-beta-hydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid, 28-O-beta-D-arabinopyranoside (1) on the basis of chemical and spectral data.

“…The shoot extract shows antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. From the whole plant of E. alba, a new triterpene saponin, namely, eclalbatin, together with alpha-amyrin, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid, have been isolated (Upadhyay et al 2001). In Ayurveda, a large number of indigenous drugs have been mentioned possessing analgesic properties.…”

“…The 3-O-fatty acid ester derivatives C12-C18 of ursolic acid (79)(80)(81)(82)(83)(84) were screened for their antifeedant activity against the agricultural pest tobacco caterpillar larvae (Spodoptera litura F) in a no-choice laboratory study. The Urs-12-ene-28-carboxy-3β-octadecanoate and olean-12-ene-28-carboxy-3β-hexadecanoate were found to exhibit exceptionally potent antifeedant activities at 50 µg/cm 2 concentration (Scheme 13).…”

“…3 This plant is well documented and several in vitro and in vivo studies describe its anti-ageing agent and anti-hepatotoxic properties. 4 Coumestans like wedelolactone, desmethyl wedelolactone, 5 furano-coumarins, ecalbatin, 6 eleanane & taraxastane glycosides, 7,8 are the consisting main active principles in E. alba. The safety, efficacy and quality of some of bioactive principles have not been scientifically validated and antibacterial activity was also not studied for isolated phytochemicals present in it.…”
