EcoJustice Approach to Dance Education

Abstract: Heatwaves, extinct species, and broadly polluted areas worldwide are apparent signs of the humancaused ecological crises. Scholars agree that a collective ecological change is needed to save the Earth. Thus, we must critically reflect how we, as dance educators, are dependent on how dance is defined, and how its educational aims and practices are justified in the era of ecocrisis. In this article, we suggest an EcoJustice approach to dance education. This theoretical study is based on the EcoJustice education … Show more

“…In recent years, the ecosocial approach (Salonen & Bardy, 2015) has become a significant perspective in Finnish educational philosophy. Ecosocial issues have been examined in areas such as virtue ethics (Pulkki, 2021;Värri, 2018), justice (Foster & Turkki, 2021;Foster et al, 2019a), well-being (Salonen, 2014), socio-cultural animation (Järvinen et al, 2020), and art education (e.g., Foster, 2017;Foster et al, 2019a;Foster et al, 2022b;Suominen, 2016). These ecosocial insights into educational philosophy have also informed the ecosocialization theory (Keto & Foster, 2021;also Foster et al, 2022a).…”

“…mm. Foster 2019;Foster & Turkki 2021).

“…When I say that my memory is a window, the listener knows that I am not talking about this window here, above the table, but that I am talking about how I feel my memory, my history. The listener may find it accurate in their perspective and immediately and in clarity with rational knowledge (also Foster & Turkki, 2021). Engaging with artwork is not only a cognitive but also a multisensible process in which perceptions obtained through different senses-and experienced together with emotions and memories-provoke the viewer to reflect and seek an explanation, a unity, in the poetic expression.…”
