Abstract. Basit A, Saeed S, Ahmed A, Baloch N, Ali AZ. 2021. Genetic structuring of Ephedra an important medicinal plant from low to high altitudinal zones of Balochistan, Pakistan. Biodiversitas 22: 713-718. The current study is based on the genetic structuring of three Ephedra species compared to the morphological and phytochemical investigation. Ephedra is a significant, medicinally important genus growing naturally in arid and semi-arid regions of Balochistan Pakistan. Resolving the taxonomic identification of Ephedra species genetic variability was estimated by using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA and Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats. Higher values revealed that E. foliata possess high genetic diversity. Less diversity was observed within Takatu Mountain Range population. Diversity in Nushki region was found higher than the Takatu Mountain Range. The genetic diversity was maintained within the populations of all three species of Ephedra at Hazarganji-Chiltan National Park. That may be due to the less anthropogenic activity in conserved region of the Park. Assessment and conservation of genetic diversity through molecular markers is essential that could be used as a key to conserve genetic variability. This study is the first endeavor to estimate genetic and phytochemical diversity within and among diverse populations of Ephedra from the region to the best of our knowledge. Genetic diversity can be used as key tool for further development of a management plan for ex situ reproduction and in situ conservation

Medicinal plants are richest source of chemical compounds that can be used to evolve novel drugs. According to World Health Organization (WHO), in developing countries more than 3.5 billion people relay on herbal drugs for their primary health care. In the present study, an attempt was carried out to authenticate some selected medicinal plants (Fagonia cretica L., Peganum harmala L., Tribulus terrestris L., Chrozophora tinctoria L. Raf. and Ricinus communis L.) from family Zygophyllaceae and Euphorbiaceae using light and scanning electron macroscopic techniques. Macroscopic evaluation and comparative anatomy (Light Microscopy) of the root and fruits revealed great diversity in macro and microscopic features. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of root powder showed non‐glandular trichomes, stellate trichomes, parenchyma cells and vessels. Fruits SEM exhibited non‐glandular trichomes, glandular trichomes, stellate trichomes, peltate trichomes and mesocarp cells. Both macroscopic and microscopic evaluation plays a crucial role in the correct substantiation and validation of novel sources. These findings can serve as an essential source of information to accomplish the authenticity and to appraise the quality and purity of the herbal drugs in accordance to WHO guidelines. These parameters can be used to distinguish the selected plants from their commonly used adulterants. Research Highlights In the current work, five plants (Fagonia cretica L., Peganum harmala L., Tribulus terrestris L., Chrozophora tinctoria L. Raf. and Ricinus communis L.) from Zygophyllaceae and Euphorbiaceae were investigated for macroscopy and microscopy (LM & SEM) for the first time. Macroscopic and microscopic evaluation disclosed great diversity in morphology and histology. Microscopy is the backbone of standardization process. Current study helped in correct identification and quality assurance of the plant materials. Their statistical investigation may possess great potency for plant taxonomists to further appraise the vegetative growth and tissue development which is requisite especially for fruit to enhance the yield of herbal drugs and their formulation. Further molecular studies, compounds isolation and characterization are required to deepen the knowledge of these herbal drugs.

Abstract. Ayoub M, Saeed S, Ahmed A, Ahmed M. 2023. Ethnobotanical survey and utilization of medicinal and food plants of Panjgur Balochistan, Pakistan. Asian J Ethnobiol 6: 27-36. The present study observes the ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological of indigenous rural communities' knowledge of the Panjgur District of Balochistan, Pakistan. The rural community of Panjgur utilizes different plants as medicine and food, and wild food plants play a secondary role in dietary supplementation. The study aimed to document medicinal plants and traditional herbal medicines used by rural people in the area. Plant specimens were collected, and plant uses were recorded by semi-structured interviews and group discussions of 120 informants, of which 90 were males and 30 were females under different age groups. A total of 63 species were used as medicine or food by local communities. Most species reported were herbs (56%), followed by shrubs (24%). The major preparation mode was fresh use (36%), and leaves were the main parts used. The total use citations for all the plant species used to cure various ailments were reported. The highest use citation for stomachic problems followed by a throat infection, anti-acne, skin allergy, and joint pain. The Use Value (UV) ranged from 0.03 to 3 by Cannabis sativa, followed by Aloe vera, Arundo donax, Chenopodium album, Citrullus colocynthis, Convolvulus arvensis, Prosopis juliflora, Phoenix dactylifera, Lactuca sativa, Ziziphora clinopodioides, and Cestrum nocturnum. This study is the first initiative for ethnobotanical investigation in the Panjgur District of Balochistan. The local community not only uses these medicinal and food plants as food and for herbal treatments but also considers them a source of income. The information generated from this study will also provide a baseline for future investigation to be carried out to evaluate the nutritional and bioactive properties of wild medicinal and food plants.
