Ecological risk assessments of endocrine disrupting organotin compounds using marine neogastropods in Hong Kong

Abstract: As active ingredients of anti-fouling paints that are widely used on ship hulls, organotin compounds, in particular tributyltin (TBT), are well-known endocrine disruptors causing sex changes in marine organisms and widespread in coastal waters and sediments worldwide. In this study, a comprehensive ecological risk assessment (ERA) of organotins was conducted in Hong Kong waters through determining the imposex status, sex ratio and tissue burdens of these compounds in the neogastropods, Thais clavigera and Thai… Show more

“…Organotin contamination resulted in a male-biased population. Imposex had occurred in all specimens, with VDSI and RPSI ranging from 2.38 to 5.36 and 0.06 to 64.22, respectively, for T. clavigera and from 2.92 to 5.31 and 0.17 to 23.44, respectively, for T. luteostoma (Leung et al, 2006). In efforts to develop the best criteria to describe imposex, VDSI has been observed to be a better indicator for the relative intensity of imposex in T. clavigera as it does not vary with seasonal variations like the RPSI (Li, 2005).…”

“…In Victoria Harbor and Aberdeen, 92% of females were observed to be effectively sterilized because of imposex (Blackmore, 2000.). A recent determination of the imposex status, sex ratios, and tissue burdens of organotin compounds in T. clavigera and Thais luteostoma from 29 coastal sites was conducted by Leung et al (2006). Organotin contamination resulted in a male-biased population.…”

“…Coprostanol (COP), a fecal sterol, has been widely used as a tracer of fecal and sewage contamination in aquatic environments because of its high concentrations in hu-trations have been found in estuaries and harbors (Leung et al, 2006;Berto et al, 2007;Choi et al, 2011b).…”
