Ecology, management and monitoring of grey dunes in Flanders

Abstract: Abstract. Grey dunes are a priority habitat type of the European Union Habitats Directive and demand special attention for conservation and management. Knowledge of the ecology of coastal grey dunes can contribute to this policy. Dune grassland succession is initiated by fixation and driven by the complex of soil formation (humus accumulation) and vegetation development. Leaching and mobilization of CaCO 3 , which are important in nutrient dynamics, complicate the picture. At present, grass-and scrub encroachm… Show more

“…As subdivision of the P. monticola population in the fragmented landscape dates back to the early 1980s, fast interdemic microevolution of aerial dispersal (or an adjustment of the behavioural threshold to perform dispersal) may have occurred in relation to recent fragmentation of short grasslands in the dune landscape (Provoost et al 2004). A similar case of reduced dispersal propensity has been described in weedy, short-lived and wind-dispersed plants of inshore islands in Canada (Cody & Overton 1996).…”

“…Vegetation of grey dunes includes Atlantic moss dominated dunes (mainly Tortula ruralis) as well as dune grassland (with a distinct organic soil layer) belonging to the Cladonio-Koelerietalia in the case of lime-rich grey dune and to the Trifolio-Festucetalia ovinae in the case of decalcified grey dunes (Provoost et al 2002). Climatological conditions are extreme, with high temperature and low humidity in the summer.…”

“…Grey dunes, known as ''Fixed coastal dunes'' are most readily defined using plant communities. Vegetation includes Atlantic moss dominated dunes (mainly Tortula ruralis) as well as dune grassland (with a distinct organic soil layer) belonging to the CladonioKoelerietalia syntaxon in case of lime rich grey dune, and to the Trifolio-Festucetalia ovinae syntaxon in case of decalcified grey dunes (Provoost et al 2002). In this study, only grey dunes without substantial soil development were surveyed since they are the habitat of both study species (see further).…”

“…Ecologically it is merely the dry component of the ''stressed dune landscape''. The main differentiating processes are related to dune fixation, soil formation and vegetation development (Provoost et al 2002). At present, rough grass and scrub encroachment result in a severe fragmentation within a matrix of dense dune vegetation (shrubs, dense grassland).…”
