Food poverty in the context of a European metropolis is the result of inadequate households' income, as well as limited choices of sourcing food in the city due to food retail sector consolidation. Corporate retailers have been criticized for greed and unethical pricing practices. The current crisis can be seen as a catalyst for change, a turning point … Show more

“…This was a protest against low prices and merchants' tactic to reject part of the produce to control final prices. While farmers were in difficulty, food prices “have remained relatively high despite the recession” (Skordili :136). “…In the North, the cities of Toronto (Blay-Palmer, 2009;Mah and Thang, 2013), New York (Morgan and Sonnino, 2010;Morgan, 2015) and San Francisco (Morgan and Sonnino, 2010) are considered among the pioneers. On the other side of the Atlantic, attempts to develop integrated urban food strategies have reached the United Kingdom (see Carey, 2013 for a discussion on Bristol; Partnership for Coventry, 2017), Northern Europe (Wiskerke, 2009;Cretella and Buenger, 2016) and Greece (Skordili, 2013). Similarly, examples are visible in Australia (Caraher et al, 2013), China (Lang and Miao, 2013), Brazil (Rocha and Lessa, 2009) and several other parts of the Global South, where the debate around ecological and integrated food systems is closely intertwined with that around food sovereignty, access to land and the rights of the peasants .…”

“…In the 1990s, Belgian, French and German food retailers (most prominently Delhaize, Carrefour, and Lidl) began operating in Greece, either through acquisitions of domestic supermarket chains or through the setting up of subsidiary operations. This led to a rapid increase in the presence of large supermarket chains in Greece, measured through the number of stores and the volume of sales, as well as their relative share in total sales (Skordili 2013), allowing them to squeeze out smaller competitors and to exercise significant power over consumers and farmers.…”
