Economic effects of changing the quality and quantity of water in drought conditions, case study: Qazvin, Iran

Abstract: Drought reduces the quantity and quality of water resources and ultimately increases the risk of agricultural activities at the farm level. Therefore, by developing risk-based economic models, the effects of changes in the quantity and quality of water resources on farmers' decisions should be examined. In this regard, the economic effects of drought on farmers in the Qazvin Plain Irrigation Network have been evaluated. For this purpose, firstly, the river flow quality was simulated using the Qual2k model in 1… Show more

“…Throughout the world, water is a precious, essential and, regrettably, scarce resource (Dritsas & Trigka, 2023), and in recent years, water crisis and water scarcity have become important problems (Rahim et al, 2020); also climate change has added to this crisis (Libey et al, 2022) and has intensified drought in many parts of the world (Smith & Wang, 2008). One of the harmful consequences of drought is the reduction of the quantity and quality of water resources (Akbari et al, 2022; Babaei et al, 2013), which has a direct impact on the lives of all humans in all parts of the world. In this regard, and due to the importance of water, proper management of its consumption has become a vital issue in any society.…”

“…10,11 This phenomenon leads to an imbalance between water supply and demand with the dominance of abnormally dry climate 12 and it contributes to water insecurity. [13][14][15] Research shows that global communities are becoming more aware of drought. 6 Drought events affect various economic sectors and the environment.…”

“…Other programming models utilized in the farming sector are minimization of total absolute deviation (MOTAD) and target MOTAD (Tauer 1983). These methods seek to minimize absolute deviations for a sector of activities using a subjective risk aversion parameter for each decision-maker (Romero and Rehman 2003;Langemeier et al 2020;Akbari et al 2022). At the same time, the mean-semi-absolute deviation (SAD) model uses SAD as a risk estimator of study variable values concerning a fixed goal (Zhang et al 2015).…”
