“…During the annual cycle, February is the month with the lowest flow (43.22 m 3 /s); the average maximum temperature of 34.8°C (Hurtado, 2013) is the highest of the year. The low flow causes loss of habitat, decreased availability of organic matter and increased predation (Welcomme, 1980)—especially by Pseudoplatystoma orinocoense and Pseudoplatystoma metaense that migrate in pursuit of P. mariae schools (Ramírez‐Gil & Ajiaco‐Martínez, 2011; Usma et al, 2013), which is their main food source. Temperature is a critical environmental factor in fish physiology; and the high temperatures in February affect metabolic rate, energy balance and social and locomotor behaviour in schooling fish (Bartolini et al, 2015; Volkoff & Rønnestad, 2020), leading to an increase in natural mortality.…”
