Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management in Indonesia: Review on Indicators and Reference Values

Abstract: Although many definitions present the concept of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF),there are lack of consensus on the definition and scope for the management. Design and implementation of this specific management are still ambiguous because the formulation criteria are not specified. Supporting by Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), EAF in Indonesia has been implemented since 2010. Among 32 EAFM indicators used, standard CPUE, fish size, juvenile caught proportion, and species composition will be reviewed… Show more

“…Increased selective fishing pressure generally tends to affect the size distribution of the adult stock recruited to a fishery by reducing the proportion of large individuals. Since each fishing gear contributes a particular level of selectivity that changes the life history of fish (Liang et al, 2014), multigear strategy used to balance the exploitation has been proposed to be applied (Law et al, 2012;Hutubessy & Mosse, 2015;Law et al, 2016).…”

“…The development of EAFM performance indicators to support the development of regulations related to coastal and small island management and fisheries, both of which support an EAFM, has been a major EAFM activity in Indonesia [20]. In Indonesia, it EAFM has 32 indicators that cover six domains: habitat and ecology, fish resources, fishing technology, economy, social and institutional factors [21].…”

“…There are six domain indicators used for the implementation of EAFM including fish resources, habitat and ecosystem, fishing method, economic, social, and governance (Hutubessy and Mosse, 2015). Based on the multi-criteria analysis (MCA) approach, the flag model will be visualized to create flag status of fisheries such as red for poor, yellow for moderate, and green for good conditions.…”
