Ectopic Pancreas Bleeding in the Jejunum Revealed by Capsule Endoscopy

Abstract: Ectopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue found outside the usual anatomic location. It is often found incidentally at different sites in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The incidence of ectopic pancreatic tissue in autopsy series is 1% to 2%, with 70% of the ectopic lesions found in the stomach, duodenum and jejunum. Although it is usually a silent anomaly, an ectopic pancreas may become clinically evident when complicated by inflammation, bleeding, obstruction or malignant transformation. We report a… Show more

“…Their presence has also been reported in the colon, spleen, liver, Meckel's diverticulum, gallbladder, bile ducts, and in fallopian tubes. 38 Morphologically, they are round-firm subepithelial lesion with central dimpling or umbilication (34.6-90.0% of such lesion) caused by the opening of a duct. [39][40][41] Patients with ectopic pancreas are usually asymptomatic.…”

“…The presence of pancreatic tissue outside its normal localization and without anatomic and vascular continuity with the normal pancreas is termed pancreatic rest; aberrant, ectopic, or heterotopic pancreas are other terms to describe this entity. Complications of pancreatic rest are rare, but may include hemorrhage . Generally, pediatric cases are rarely reported, and mostly comprise case reports on intussusception, bowel obstruction, and pancreatitis .…”

“…Complications of pancreatic rest are rare, but may include hemorrhage. 1 Generally, pediatric cases are rarely reported, and mostly comprise case reports on intussusception, bowel obstruction, and pancreatitis. 2 Cases of pancreatic rest are difficult to distinguish from gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and carcinoid by endoscopy.…”

“…[10–12] Heterotopic pancreas in ileum often causes intussusception. [4,5] Several rare cases of carcinomas arising within heterotopic pancreatic tissue have been reported. [1,3,11,13–17] However, HAC arising in ileal heterotopic pancreas has not been described previously.…”
