Edge‐enabled IoT gateway criteria selection and evaluation

Abstract: Summary In this contribution, we define the concept of transferring intelligence from the cloud to the edge of the network and highlight its importance in modern IoT architectures. It leads to edge‐enabled IoT solutions, where intelligence is distributed to the end devices, ie, edge of the network. The IoT gateway is a middle‐ware between devices and cloud and facilitates computations and communication. We have encountered a research gap and decided to propose our solution on creating an edge‐enabled IoT gatew… Show more

“…This context supported the rise of predictive maintenance strategies, which is backed up by some recent works [ 5 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] in the literature proposing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to address such challenges. In this way, edge computing is also emerging as a technology in several aspects of IIoT [ 18 ].…”

“…Experimental resutls showed that control is possible in many solutions, but these solutions will not be depending just on the cloud services. The intelligence on the edge of the network will play a significant role [26]. The computing capacities of end devices are increasing;…”

“…Most of the sensors and devices are not able to connect to the internet for data sharing purposes. To overcome this issue local gateways are designed which act as a mediator among all sensors and devices for controllability, security, and connectivity [36]. Deployment of gateways in livestock farms improves the automation process and controls real-time livestock monitoring systems.…”
