Lau et al. reported that electrically evoked contractions of the prostatic stroma were markedly attenuated in prazosin-treated rats and guinea pigs. 21 In addition, relaxation of the bladder neck muscle after administration of α1-blockers has been shown to lead to backflow of seminal fluid from the prostatic urethra into the bladder. 22Therefore, α1-blockers might inhibit AFMS contraction.In conclusion, evaluation of the movement of the pelvic floor muscles during voiding has previously been difficult. The present results show that strong contractions of the SUS and AFMS are important for normal voiding, and that SUS relaxation with aging can worsen voiding function.
