Educational chatbots for project-based learning: investigating learning outcomes for a team-based design course

Abstract: Educational chatbots (ECs) are chatbots designed for pedagogical purposes and are viewed as an Internet of Things (IoT) interface that could revolutionize teaching and learning. These chatbots are strategized to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized conversation. Nevertheless, in the education paradigm, ECs are still novel with challenges in facilitating, deploying, designing, and integrating it as an effective pedagogical tool across multiple fields… Show more

“…Chatbots do not understand complex expressions (Bibauw et al, 2019; Jeon, 2022; Yin & Satar, 2020), and good vocabularies are required to communicate with the chatbot. In addition good AI knowledge alone does not facilitate the self‐directive process, because the use of the chatbot may change students' learning behaviour but not their learning cognition and perception (Kumar, 2021). In addition, the chatbot actively asks the students questions and responds to their questions in a learner‐friendly environment.…”

“…Chatbots, also referred to as conversational interfaces, are programs designed to interact with users in a human-like way, answering questions and performing tasks in a specific area (Griol et al, 2017;Winkler & Söllner, 2018). In the educational field, chatbots are increasingly adopted since they support immediate and personalized feedback (Kumar, 2021;Okonkwo & Ade-Ibijola, 2021;Winkler & Söllner, 2018). To date, most common uses of chatbots in education contexts have focused on supporting teaching and learning, administrative tasks, student assessment, and research and development (Okonkwo & Ade-Ibijola, 2021).…”
