Effect of a combination of medium chain triglycerides, linoleic acid, soy lecithin and vitamins A and E on wound healing in rats

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of the study was to determine the effect of a combination of medium chain triglycerides (caprylic, capric, caproic and lauric acids), linoleic acid (essential fatty acid), vitamins A and E and soy lecithin, through a morphometric study, on the wound healing kinetics of experimental cutaneous ulcers. Methods: A total of 45 male Wistar rats were used, in which a skin flap of total thickness with an area of 4 cm 2 was removed. The animals were divided randomly into 3 groups of 15 rats each, Contro… Show more

“…The choice of the size of the wounds was based on studies performed similarly in horses (MARTINS et al, 2003;SOUZA et al, 2006;, as well as depth of the lesions (MAGALHÃES et al, 2008; including skin and subcutaneous tissue, without involving adjacent muscles. Initial total area of the wounds was similar to those of the authors mentioned above, but differed in format to Oliveira , who solely conducted square wounds in similar experiment.…”

“…The wound area was estimated (MAGALHÃES et al, 2008) using the following equation: A = π x R x r (where A represents the area, R represents the greatest distance and r the shortest distance recorded in the wound).…”

“…A rat study (4) was conducted with the objective to evaluate the effect of the association of medium-chain triglycerides (caprylic, capric, capric and lauric acids), linoleic acid (essential fatty acid), vitamins A and E and soy lecithin (test product), by means of morphometric analysis, in 45 male Wistar rats, regarding the kinetics of repairing experimental skin ulcers. The animals were randomly assigned to 3 groups containing 15 rats each, Control group (saline solution 0.9%), Reference group (clostebol compound associated with neomycin sulphate) and Test group, which received daily topical therapy, from the 1 st to the 12 th PO day.…”

“…Because they are classified as medium-chain triglycerides, they are useful as a nutritional source, solvent, medium, and stabilizer of oral, topical or parenteral products. They can be used for the treatment, as well as the prevention of, ammoniacal dermatitis and pressure ulcers, forming a protective barrier on the skin and impeding maceration, besides being important in cellular inflammation processes, providing relief after the first application and boosting local cellular nutrition, in addition to having a great capacity for tissue regeneration (4) . All these components work in a way that increases the immune response, thus accelerating the inflammatory process and, consequently, stimulating the healing process through angiogenesis and epithelialization, facilitating the entrance of growth factors into the cell (5) .…”

“…Essential fatty acids such as those derived from linoleic acid are among the resources supporting the healing process (7). Dersani ® ointment belongs to this group, being used www.bjournal.com.br Braz J Med Biol Res 43(4) 2010 in any type of cutaneous lesion as a bactericide during the different phases of the process (3).…”
