Effect of Acetic Acid on Denitrification and Dephosphatation Process Efficiencies in Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor

Abstract: This study investigates the feasibility of using an organic substrate in the form of acetic acid to enable wastewater denitrification in a Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR). The impact of nitrates presence on the yield of biological dephosphatation was determined as well. The experiment included 296 cycles and was divided into 4 series differing in the load of nitrates. The N:(C and P) ratios were: 7:(140 and 7); 35:(140 and 7); 70:(140 and 7) and 140:(140 and 7). The hydraulic retention time in the reac… Show more

“…When a steel disk was used in SBBR system, the improved performance in the absorption of organic substrate leads to a high denitrification efficiency [70]. The thickness of the biofilm varies from 1-20 μm and allowed the organic substrate to be ingested effectively.…”

“…Nevertheless, more than 90% of acetic acid is produced synthetically (Atasoy et al, 2018). In several wastewater treatment plants, acetic acid has been used as a carbon source in the denitrification process (Mielcarek et al, 2018;Du et al, 2019). However, this acetic acid is mostly bought externally, which is obtained by petroleum-based methods.…”

“…SBBR has a much higher pollutant removal performance than a traditional SBR [Singh and Srivastava, 2011]. Moreover, the possibility to enable wastewater denitrification in a (SBBR) by using an organic substrate in the form of acetic were investigated in addition to studying the characteristics of the sludge formed via SVBBR [Mielcarek et al, 2018, Kłodowska et al, 2018.…”
