“…Contaminants get adsorbed onto the clay particles leading to marked changes in the geotechnical and chemical characteristics of the soils. Past work (Foreman and Daniel 1986;Gnanapragasam et al 1995;Kamon et al 1996;Khan and Pise 1994;Kirov 1989;Kumapley and Ishola 1985;Mesri and Olson 1970;Nayak et al 2007;Roque and Didier 2006;Sivapullaiah and Savitha 1997;Soule and Burns 2001;Sridharan et al 1981;Sridharan and Venkatappa Rao 1979;Sunil et al 2006Sunil et al , 2008Uppot and Stephenson 1989) has shown that the index and engineering properties of contaminated soil tend to change due to chemical reactions between the soil mineral particles and the contaminant.…”

“…Due to the low pH, acid rain has caused degradation of performance and reduction of life cycle of construction facilities such as concrete bridge piers and concrete road pavements [6]. Upon exposing to the acid rain, performance of CHMS can be weakened due to the drop in pH, which will lead to dissolution and decomposition of cement hydration products such as Portlandite (Ca(OH) 2 ) and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) in the soil matrices [8]. Coupled with the dissolution of cement hydration products, calcium (Ca) will be released and leached from CHMS, causing reduction in strength and degradation of other mechanical properties [8].…”

“…Kamon et al (1996) also revealed same limited improving effect of additional immobilizing agent content after curing. The similar improving effect indicates that the extent of hydration reactions of two cases is similar, which is due to the insufficient water amount in the curing period.…”
