“…pindolol (Hitzenberger et al, 1982) atenolol +1 +1 (Rigby et al, 1985) and acebutolol (Roux et al, 1983). However, other comparisons of the kinetics in young and old healthy subjects have a failed to reveal differences for propranolol (Schneider et al, 1980;Rigby et al, 1985), or°m etoprolol (Quarterman et al, 1981;Rigby et X .o * 2 al., 1985). The reason for the differences found b .. in the present study may therefore lie in the i fact that the elderly subjects studied were patients often on drug therapy for other disease processes rather than healthy old persons in the community, i.e.…”

“…However, luded following thyroidectomy (two due to Schneider et al (1980) following single oral doses of te compliance and a third patient stopped 40 and 80 mg of propranolol did not find an age related reduction in the clearance of propranolol in eady state had been achieved during chronic non-smoking healthy subjects. They suggested that t was supported by the finding that the the use of sick elderly subjects in the former study Iropranolol concentration at the beginning may explain the different findings.…”

“…There is, however, some evidence that these drugs are less effective in older patients (Schocken & Roth, 1977) although this has not been formally investigated. The pharmacokinetics of propranolol and metoprolol (Schneider et al, 1980;Schneck et al, 1980;Quarterman et al, 1981) are probably little altered in fit elderly people, but this does not apply to hospitalized patients (Castleden & George, 1979). Water soluble drugs such as atenolol which are mainly excreted by the kidney may reach much higher blood levels in the elderly, and should, in theory, be given in reduced dosage (Kurch & Gorg, 1982) although, in practice, higher doses are tolerated (O'Callaghan et al, 1983).…”
