Effect of Akin Osteotomy on Hallux Valgus Correction After Scarf Osteotomy With Hallux Valgus Interphalangeus

Abstract: Background: Recurrence after hallux valgus correction is a relatively frequent occurrence. Little is known about the importance of initial correction on radiologic outcome. The objective of our study was to determine postoperative radiologic parameters correlating with loss of correction after scarf osteotomy and the combined scarf/akin osteotomy, respectively. Methods: Loss of correction was evaluated based on a group of 53 feet with isolated scarf osteotomy (S group) and a group of 17 feet with combined scar… Show more

“…42 Since its formal introduction in the 19th century, hallux valgus (HV) deformity has been one of the most commonly investigated and treated pathologies of the foot owing to its high prevalence and symptomatic nature. 12,27,32,38,41,44,50,52,54,78,96 Although HV has received a considerable amount of scientific attention over the last century, its pathogenesis is still not entirely understood. 23,63…”

“…43 Often, the recurrences have been described in connection with different operative methods, independent from the implementation of an Akin osteotomy. 35,36 This loss of correction has been shown to correlate with the preoperative HVA, IMA, DMAA, TSP, and I-MTPJ congruency. 59,60…”

“…High-speed burs are being used in robotic assisted surgery [ 1 – 4 ] as well as in conventional surgery [ 5 7 ] for shaping bones. High-speed burs heat up by friction which can induce bone necrosis and protein denaturation.…”
