Effect of Alkali Pectinase Pretreatment on Bagasse Soda-Anthraquinone Pulp

Abstract: Pectinase pretreatment prior to bagasse soda-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping was conducted, and the effects of pectinase pretreatment on the pulp strength properties, energy consumption, and pulpability were evaluated in this study. Considering the pulp properties, the optimal conditions for the pectinase pretreatment were a pectinase dosage of 60 U/g (with respect to oven-dry bagasse) and 60-min treatment time. Compared with the control pulps obtained under the same treatment conditions with enzyme pretreatment (j… Show more

“…As one of the most abundant natural resources, cellulose, is characterized by unique features including renewability, biodegradability, low thermal expansion, and eco-friendly properties (Yan and Xu 2015;Liu et al 2017;Zhang et al 2018Zhang et al , 2019a. This could lead to the development of light weight and low-cost green products.…”

“…AQ addition in cooking liquor enhanced the pulp yield, viscosity and degree of polymerization (DP) values of the chickpea stalk pulps. AQ oxidizes the reducing end of the polysaccharide in the pulp, preserving it from alkaline deterioration (Liu et al, 2017;Masrol et al, 2018;Shao et al, 2017). Peeling reactions that cause yield loss are reduced and pulp yields increase (Fig.…”

“…Bagasse was pretreated with the pectinase in a 4 L reactor under the following conditions: temperature, 55 °C; pulp consistency, 10%; initial pH, 9.0 (adjusted with acetate buffer); pectinase dosage, 60 IU/g of oven-dried bagasse; and total time, 60 min (Liu et al 2017). The control samples were subjected to the same treatment conditions without the addition of the enzyme.…”

“…All bagasse samples were subjected to soda-AQ pulping in an oil bath rotating digester. The conditions of cooking were as follows: alkali dosage, 13%; anthraquinone dosage, 0.05%; ratio of liquor to bagasse, 5:1 (v/w); maximum temperature, 158 °C; heating time, 100 min; and holding time, 100 min (Liu et al 2017).…”
